The SMERSH guys were real during the war. That's what my great uncle told me stories about. He once told me a story that took place in late 1944 right outside Prussia when he and a SMERSH officer were sent to interrogate a downed German pilot. They grilled him with everything they knew about the local Nazi airbases. The pilot had busted half his own teeth out by gnawing at a wooden chair leg in horror that the Soviets knew more than he did. In the end he asked for a cyanide pill. In turn, the SMERSH officer said that he was not worth the pill and shot him in the back of the head.
